okay. the two may be related, may not. first is, truck used to start up after turning over twice. now its more like 5 or 6 times. new battery, turns over strong. not really a concern at this point, but it turns over a full 3-4 seconds before firing up just wondering what coould cause this. second, for the first 2 miles or so after a cold start, it bogs down if given more than about 1/3 pedal of gas, and exhaust note is really raspy and pops a LOT until it warms up a bit. any ideas? no cat and glasspack(if thats relevant), so i can hear it quite well. but if i give it just the right ammount of gas while cold it does fine. just wondering if this is normal.

if your running high miles this will happen. plus if your choke isnt working its hard as hell to start in the cold. try pumping your gas pedal 1-3 times b4 cranking her over. she might fire right up. my truck has about 300,000 miles and it also does this untill its fully warmed up. it takes a few for theses older motors to get all cylinders firing. u can do things like a tune up and double check your timing every few months to make sure everything staying in place. i never stop trying to improve the way my motor runs and it runs awsome once its warmed up. but still when i first start it its like i can count how many cylinders are firing, ill hear another one kick in and then another and wala. this happens alot more when u burn a quart of oil every week like i do. plugs get pretty nasty so im sure things like this can contribute. u can also check your egr valve clean it out, run some seafoam through the oil and tank. (clean your damn plug after words.lol) make sure your plug wires arnt on the exhaust mani, stuff like that will go a long way untill you run in to an actuall problem. just check the basics first as long as its still runs.

Hey mazdafr, does your truck smoke like a freight train? Mine has right over 200,000 on the clock and she smokes enough to hide the truck upon startup, and for the first few miles down the road, then no more smoke (or too little to notice.) Yours a carton-a-day truck too?

when i start my truck, i can hide my dads house from the fbi if i needed to. it smokes crazy blue when i start it. its burning oil. my valve guide seals are bad so when it sits, oil drips into the cylinders and my rings are probly toast to. wich also causes u to burn oil. but yea it smokes like a m.f. when i first start it then it kinda goes away. most of the time smoke on start up is mainly valve seals and consistant smoke is rings. i burn a good bit of oil so i would almost bet that my rings are as bad as my valve seals. and also if your pcv valve is bad u can burn oil to. when i did the weber swap, i noticed standing oil in the intake manifold right under the carb. i was told either alot of blow by (what ever that means im sure somone knows) or a bad pcv valve or both. i replaced the valve but she still smokes a bit. i hear after replacing rings or seals it will still smoke for a while as it burns the rest of the shit out of there.

any way to check to see if the choke is working correcttly or not? and ive been meaning to check the egr valve. just need to stop stalling and do it. 222,000 miles on mine, with a brand new head about 3,000 miles ago(the engine shop that replaced it said whoever worked on it before didnt torque the head down enough, ran hot, blew the gasket and warped the old head). my dad had the work done, but i also suspect he had the timing retarded because it isnt as peppy as it was before. need a timing light. lol. but mine, like yours, runs very smoothly once it warms up.

plus, mine doesnt use oil, but it DOES have a very annoying warped oil pan. leaks about a quart a week. but i just keep a cllose eye on it. been running it like that since i had it(14 months), with no problems. doesnt help that 3 of the pan bolts are broken off in the block. if it werent for that i wouldve replaced it way before now. i need to go get an easy-out kit and do it right.i dont wanna drill them out unless i absolutely have to.

There is a tiny amount of oil standing in my air filter housing. I don't know where it's blasting out of to get into the housing. Could be the pcv valve. I don't worry about it too much. It's an '88 so I don't expect perfection.

yea normally not too big of a deal. i just noticed oil bubbling out of my filter that i have on top of my valve cover. (i have the weber so i dont have that hose hooked up, just a filter) must be getting alot of pressure in there but its still runnin sweet so i aint messn with it. but thats probly how your gettin oil in the air filter. that hose is hooked to the filter housing on a stock carb. pcv valve runs to the intake mani under the carb. and you will know if your choke is working. are the rpms real high on a cold start, do they go back down when u blip the throttle. the wire for the stock choke runs to the back of the alternator. u can make sure its hooked up. if your smoking and u have had a head job that recently then id bet its your rings making u smoke. egr valve is easy as shit to take off and clean. 3 10mm bolts and a little wire and vacume hose and u can pull it off and clean it. mine was clogged, did wonders when i cleaned it.
