My 90 b2200 doesn't run very well. When the number one cyl is at tdc the Mark on the pulley is at about 14 btc. It should be art tdc, but when I do that the piston is moving down. Help me please.

When #1 fires, the pulley mark should line up with 6 BTDC at idle speed.

When I have had it running the timing Mark on the crank poultry is over by the alternator. Not even close to where it should be but truck doesn't have much power.

If you worked on the timing belt or did a head job, I suggest you check and set the following: (Did you overhaul the engine recently?)

The cam gear marked #1 is lined up with the 12 o'clock position mark.

The crank shaft pulley mark is at TDC and at the 12 o'clock position.

The #1 piston is flush with the top of the engine block.

The rotor under the distributor cap is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire which is at the 9 o'clock position.

These need to be set as described to set you timing mark using a timing light.

The engine was rebuilt a few years ago and had been running fine. I built the truck and sold it to my sons GF. I got it back from her due to non running problem. I cleaned the carb and got it running and tried to check the timing but the mark is over by the alternator. I started over and did exactly what you said with lining all the marks up like a new build. The only way I can get the truck to start at all is with the timing mark on the crank pointing over to the alt. Last night I decided to start over again. I set the crank at TDC. and the cam at TDC. When I do this the #1 piston has already started back down. To set the piston at a true TDC the crank timing mark is past the 10 btdc.

It seems like you need to remove the timing belt and then set the cam gear and crank shaft pulley first. Also check the distributor in reference to the rotor if pointing to the 9 o'clock position for the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor cap.

Your comment sounds like a jumped timing belt issue that caused the problem. Is the timing belt okay or the belt tension assembly still in working order?
