Hello everyone... I recently made the decision to try and revive my dads old truck. His father bought it brand new and only used it to haul firewood around the yard. My dad got it when my grandfather passed away and drove it back and forth to work for years. It developed and oil leak, and quit firing. My dad completely rebuilt the motor and we cannot get it to start. We have fuel, and the motor is cranking over great. The timing is correct, and I have replaced the pick up coil and the ignition control module. When we pulled the wire going from coil to distributor, there was no spark. I've seen that a fusible link could be corroded but I cannot find one. Thanks for any help, and sorry for the long post, but I was trying to be specific.

Check to see if you are getting 12 volt positive to the coil positive terminal with the ignition in the "run" position. These trucks have a history of bad electrical part of the ignition switch as they get old, so check to ensure that circuit is OK, different from the cranking circuit.

If positive voltage there, I'd check the ignition timing. TDC #1 should have the rotor facing like at 9 o'clock position as you look at it, and the terminal above that should go to #1 plug.

Thanks a lot. I had eliminated the ignition switch because all my other accessories were working. I know the timing is correct and the #1 is at tdc with the rotor at the 9 o'clock position. The cap and rotor also have been replaced. I left that out of the original post. Do you have to check voltage at the coil while turning the key? Actually trying to start the motor? I will do this this afternoon and get back to y'all. I've been using this site for the past month while working on the truck and finally broke down and asked for help.

Turn key to "run" position, not to "start", that's a different circuit.

You may actually get power to start the engine and once you release the key, it will die. Like mine did. Electrical part of the switch, not the key tumbler part.

Did this fix your problem? It sounds like what I'm trying to fix!!!! I had my coil and ignition control mod checked and they both passed. I pulled the spark plugs and checked for spark (NONE) I pulled the wire from the coil and checked for spark (NONE). All the fuses look good. I'm wondering if there is a fuse under the dash some where.
My truck has never had any issues so I'm stumped!

I have not had time to check yet, but according to what everyone has told me if you're not getting voltage to the coil then the problem has to be the ignition switch which apparently is a common problem with these trucks... I'm gonna check tomorrow. I'll post results.

Bing, turn your key to the run position, then check for voltage at the positive terminal on the coil.
If no voltage, then your switch will be suspect.

Update... I checked for voltage at the coil and have none. So I assume the ignition switch is bad. However, even running a hot wire from the battery to the coil couldn't get the coil to spark. I thought for sure this would bypass the switch and throw some spark... could it be possible I have a bad coil and switch?

So even running a wire right from the battery to the coil yielded no spark. I checked the resistance of the coil wire (running to distributor) and found that it was bad. So now I need to get a set of plug wires and hopefully this explains why I wasn't able to basically hotwire the truck and bypass the ignition switch.

You're on the right track keep us posted. Based on your explanation it seems you have a bad power source to the coil most likely a bad ignition switch cable. Then you found a bad high tension coil wire between the coil and distributor...
