Okay here goes, so I been away for a while, but I finally got my new plug wires and coil and ignition switch. I installed them all, and the truck still won't fire. Being that I did the work by myself, I cannot pull a plug wire or check voltage at the coil while cranking the truck. So I'm not sure if I have fire. The truck has been sitting for about 3 years, so the gas is definitely bad. I floored the gas pedal and the weber should've been flooded, but I couldn't smell a lick of gas. I have dad bringing home some starter fluid when he gets off work. With my crank pulley timing marks lined up my rotor is at 7 o'clock instead of 9 like it should be. So when dad gets home I'll have him help me pull a plug wire to check for spark and check for voltage at the coil.Is it true you can run a hose off the fuel pump to a gas can and bypass the gas in the tank? Sorry guys but I've been working on this a while and I'm frustrated and the only thing left to do is replace the ecm... ive already replaced the cap, rotor, ignition control module, and the pick up coil. Now new wires, ignition switch and coil... any thoughts and insight would be greatly appreciated.

I was going to say that if you're really "by yourself" (like if you're as ugly as The Cuss), there is a way to do this.

Pull a spark plug wire off, insert a spark plug into the wire. Run a lead (with alligator clips) from the outer terminal of the spark plug to good engine ground. Position the spark plug on top of the engine so you can see it through the gap wwhen the hood is open, point the spark plug gap towars you. Crank the engine, look for spark across the plug center terminal to the outer one.

Alternatively, there are inexpensive spark testors that fot between your plug wire end and the spark plug. These have a short wire, so I can't swear that you'll be able to see these light if you sit in the driver seat, you may need to stand up with your right foot on the clutch and look into the engine compartment as you crank (might be asier if yours has automatic transmission).

Dad came home and we sprayed some starter fluid down the carb, turned the key, and got a backfire!!! So I know I've got spark! Now I just need to drop and drain the tank, flush out the fuel lines and put some stuff back together. Plus new tires, its been sittin on a couple flats for a few years, but we're on a downhill slide now! I'm so excited. While I was waitin on dad I went ahead and blocked out and wiped a few dents I found (I am a painter by trade), so I can't wait to get her back on the road.

Sounds like a decent plan.

Yea we are definitely on the right track. No spark has been the problem for a while. Thanks to everyone who helped on this site cuz I never would've figured all this out without y'all. I'll post some pics soon.

So after replacing practically every ignition component on the truck I am finally firing. I drained the bad gas, blew out the lines, replaced the fuel filter. Then I noticed I am backfiring thru the top of the carb from the gas or starting fluid we're using... so no fuel is getting to the carb. Dad had put a weber 32/36 on here at one point, and to cut thru the bs I just ordered a new one and a new fuel pump. So I need to install those and run new lines and hopefully finally get her back on the road.

good work... mine backfires thru intake on initial startup too. also the Weber 32/36. I think mine is the choke tho. but something to look into. my choke has been disconnected so idk.
