engine smokes for about 5 mins at start up

I have a 1993 B2200 engine blows white smoke out of the tail pipe at first start up of the day. I replaced my head with a new one and had my local machine shop assemble the new head once done i assembled the head on my engine with a felpro head gasket and replaced my PCV valve as well. One would think that would fix the problem but it seems like i still continue to blow white smoke it smells like oil and my plugs are full of oil. with a new head and new valve seats and valve seals i assume its my rings, the odd thing is that it runs great and has power. I did a compression test and all four cylinders are around 153 to 155 with 153000 miles i believe that is good compression. I also did a leak down test and i only have about a 3 to 4 percent lost of pressure and i looked up that anything under 8 percent is normal for an engine with this mileage, with all that being said a assume i am not getting any blow by from rings but i could be wrong. can anyone point me in the right direction because i am lost at this point thanks.

well i have a 1988 b2200 with 197000 plus miles and mines smoke a little at start up also i know its my rings but i only let mines run for about a minute and then i tap the gas to knock the throttle down and it stops but before i started using 50 wt motor oil it use to be worse

My truck was smoking on startup. It would stop when the engine warmed up. It got worse and took longer to clear. I had oil puddling on top of the pistons. I then rebuilt the engine.

Before I installed new pistons/rings and had the head re-done, my '88 was smoking enough that it needed work, but not like a cropduster like some of you say.

My compression was 165 in all four, but my plugs got dirty in a month or two, so I'd take them out and clean with a wire wheel on the end of a drill. 2.5 years later, I haven't yet had to clean the plugs.

In other words, your compression rings are fine, but your oil control ring is NOT doing its job, not expanding any longer to "scrape" the oil off the sides of the cylinder, so it's burning. That's very common with age and about 150K on these engines, and worse if they have been allowed to run hot, like bad radiator.

Thanks guys, do you think i should get the entire engine rebuilt or would i be ok with just changing the rings and re honing the cylinder walls. The reason i ask is because the truck runs great, power, quite and idles real smooth.

I just did rings, pistons (because I'm not good at cleaning), and connecting rod bearings. And had the head re-done. And I didn't remove the engine from the truck.

How much oil are you having to add every XXX miles? Like 1 quart every 1000 I'd leave well enough alone, but one quart every 100 miles I would do a re-ring

not sure how much oil it burns because the problem just started but i will say that it smokes a lot for the first 5 mins. I was planning on removing my engine but if i could leave it in the truck that would be great. How did you get the pan off? did you remove the cross member? and if so did the cross member go back in place easily, what i am asking is if the bolt holes line up easily.

See my thread. I took off a cross member (if I remember right), and I pulled a steering part like an idler or pitman off for clearance. I've taken the pan off twice total, first time I un-did a tie rod end. I just followed sequence in the service manual, removed two things called "gussets" too. Toughest was getting angle to pound off the pan.
