I posted this a couple days ago with no response, maybe I posted in the wrong section but hopefully someone can help.

Hey guys havent been on here in a while because i let the truck sit for about a year while i was focusing a lot on my work and future. But anyways within the last two week ive put a weber 32/36 in to get the truck to stay running because after multiple times trying to mess with the stock carb i gave in and bought a weber. I put that on and it seemed to stay running but still had a sluggish start and ran wierd. So initially i thought of the timing. Keep in mind i didnt know anything about timing a truck until last week.... So i was just pulling the distributor out and spinning a gear until it sounded better..... my bad lol. I eventually put the crank and the cam in
TDC and set the distibutor to #1 position and low and behold it started without a hesitation, it was beautiful. Then i decided i wanted to put the pacesetters on so i ordered them and set off taking the old exhaust recirculation tubes off and busted half the nipples off the manifold so i left them open. Now i got back in the truck and it started up.... once. Then it shut off. Now i cranked it over it started for a second and then would shut off.

This is where my question is. When i tried cranking it over again there was a loud popping noise from in the dash followed by heavy smoke that smelled like burnt hair rolling out of the dash. Now it cranks over still but it wont start. What do you guys think this could be?? I know its getting fuel. But im thinking maybe something in the ignition switch control the spark, maybe????

Hopefully yall can help me every other question ive had was always answered from another post.
Thank you in advance and any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

You can look at the ignition switch and it's harness and I would also try to get a look at the back side of the fuse box in the dash to check for chaffed and shorting wires. But, you're probably going to want to pull the dash to really get a good look at all that wiring... unless you find something simple like an amplifier or other power wire poorly routed through the firewall - without a grommet for example.

I've seen several fuse boxes with shorting wires on the back side of it like this one....

If you're feeling brave, you can try it some more and see if you're getting 12v at the coil with the ignition switch in the 'ON' position. If not, then you have a starting point. But it's not going to fix itself and is going to need some repair whatever/wherever it is.

Does it smoke in the ON position or just when you tried to crank?

Anyhow DIY wiring mods from a previous owner that might be suspect?

Well no it hasn't smoke since that time, it just cranks over it doesn't even try to start. I've pulled that dash apart and cant find any short or chaffed wires... but I have notices two fuses that pop every time you try to put a fuse in the socket. The two fuses say Engine and Room. I don't know exactly what they control but the big wire on the back is connected to both of these wires. Im going to trace these wires and see if I can find anything but so far I see nothing.

Thank you for the input
