I have a rear wheel drive 1987 b2200 5 speed. 2.2L engine. I need to replace the oil pan gasket. Im using a Chilton for the procedure. Any experience doing this job?

Im hesitant on doing it because the cross member and a few other parts need to come off. The manual says "support engine at the crank shaft pulley"

To me that means put a jack under the pulley wheel to support the engine. I feel that could be wrong. That seems like a lot of strain and weight to be put on the pulley.

Has anyone removed oil pan for this model? suggestions?

Drop the cross member and steering linkage. I dont use the crank pulley, instead I use the transmission to support the motor.

Don't use a gasket! Use grey RTV silicone, factory manual instructions.

Thank you so much! I will do that. Yes I have the Grey RTV silicone and from reading other posts here learned to use only that.

I have removed my oil pan twice (1988 B2200), once to re-seal, and once during my rebuild. You need to remove one tie rod, or one steering linkage, plus the cross-member, gussets, etc. Hardest part was actually pounding the pan off !!

I also used Ultra Grey.

To break the seal on the pan I used to pound stubby screwdrivers with the flats ground down to chisel edges into the seam between pan and block. I never saw the need to support the engine. I would drop the center support and the two bolts holding the Pitman arm, allowing it to drop out of the way. Hope this helps.

Why do you have to support the engine? The motor mounts are not removed so that point seems pointless.

I didn't support the engine when I did this.

I did not need to support engine. Took off 1 side of cross member and pulled it down. Hardest part was taking off pan. I used a 2" putty knife. Job succesfull. Took a long time but well worth it. Saved $300 which is the cost to have a auto shop do it. Thanks for the support everyone.
