Okay guys, first off thank you for all your help. The truck is close to running, I've been working on it now and then. Still struggling with the timing. My question is...

I know there should be two painted marks on the crank pulley. I have none. I have one notch. So to set the crank at TDC do I align with notch at 12 oclock or with 0

I have the same single notch on mine. the timing cover of my engine has a range that goes between 10 and T with ten small lines in between to show TDC to 10deg below. I used a paint pen to fill the notch with paint and wiped off the excess that made the notch very visible with my timing light.

if you don't have a timing cover you can simply set your motor to top dead center and mark the engine so you have a reference. you will then need a timing light that you can set the advance on so that you can set the advance to 6deg (should be what the sticker under your hood says is the right advance) and the notch should line up with you TDC mark on the engine.

That would work assuming the timing was set correctly before but it was not so I am working blind. I just need to know where that notch has to be in order for the crank (bottom end) is at TDC. I have my cam at TDC and everything else where it should be.

Set the crank by aligning the notch with the 0

Fantastic. I appreciate that... then I know to turn the engine two revolutions to make sure the marks still align. Then do I roll it to 6*btdc or do that with a timing light once it is running?

The 2.0 liter motors have two painted marks on the crank pulley (yellow for fire and white for TDC) and one alignment pin in the block. The 2.2 motors have a notched pulley and a plastic timing cover with the 10 BTDC _TDC marks.

Hope this helps clear up some confusion.

If the engine will start and run just use your timing light.
