Hi everyone I have a few questions about the timing on my 2.2L B2200.

1. I have been having some rough running conditions and I know I'm getting spark and unless my filter in the carb of my weber is clogged I'm sure I'm getting fuel. If my timing light looks good at 6 deg. BTDC on the crank pully notch is it possible that my timing belt could be a tooth off on my cam pully?

the mechanical inclination in me says that would be impossible since the distributer gear is driven by the cam but I cant figure out why it sounds like my timing is off and I have had trouble with it since I first started the truck since my rebuild.

I started it the first time after a FULL rebuild and got a couple back fires and shut it off and found that my timing belt was off by about a quarter turn on the cam gear. I KNOW FOR SURE it wasn't like that during assembly. I'm not sure how it could have moved but it did. I readjusted it and it ran fine after that but a little choppy.

the plugs are fine and it starts sounding really good at around 3000 rpms but at idle it sounds choppy and like its gonna die. I tried adjusting the carb and no dice.

that's why I wonder if my timing could be off a tooth on the belt or something like that.

what do you guys think?

2. Also I just wanted to make sure that on my 2.2L the cam pully should have the number 1 pointed straight up at that little indicator point on the seal housing and the crank notch should be near straight up at the T////10 markings on the lower timing cover to be properly set?

I set it this way with the cam pully #1 on the notch, pretty much straight up and the crank pully notch on the T of the lower timing cover, also pretty much straight up and then turned it over by hand five or six times and they lined back up the same and called it good. I believe that is how it's done. please correct me if I'm wrong.

thanks for your time reading and all help is very much appreciated.

Here you go...

That should help answer most all of your questions on timing. Dan

PS. Don't forget to line up the two marks on the distributor shaft when you stab it back in!!!!

the hole in the ring behind the bold on the cam gear is in a different place than the picture on the forum post you added. ill take it off tonight when I can torque it back on properly and see if that's it. also what two marks are you talking about on the distributer. I have always put it in on TDC and got the number 1 position to line up. is there another way to install the distributer?

See the "dot" and "line"... these should be lend up when you put the distributor in.

ooh. I see now. I didn't even know about that at all. I don't know what I did but today I took the belt off and set the timing from the first step.

I only used my TDC marks for #1 I made on the distributor when I installed it but whatever I did is working. The timing light confirms that Im set correctly and it is steady this time.

last time it was a little jumpy but this time its coming up clear and steady on the crank pulley mark at T when I set my advance on my light to 6.0 and low and behold she is running fairly smooth. its not a perfectly balanced motor but I know im in a good place with the settings because when I sit at a light with the shifter in nuetral it doesn't bounce like it did before it just sits there lightly vibrating.

I feel like thats a good sign. I am idling a little high at around 880 to 900 but I'm pretty sure I can sort that out with the carb.

I'll let you guys know if anything goes bad in the next few days.

After you sort out your idle issues, check your motor mounts they may be broken and causing your shaking issues.

no I just put the new ones on when I rebuilt the motor last weekend.

there good and the slight vibration in the shifter in nuetral with the truck ideling is something Ive always experienced with manual cars and trucks. before it was like a vibrating and ever other second it would twitch along with the put sound from the engine so that was the rough running condition that prompted this whole thing. now there is still the occasional put sound but its like one ever fifteen or twenty seconds and for the rest of the time it runs pretty smooth.

tell ya what. to make this simple tomorow on my lunch break or after work ill take a video for a min or so of the truck at idle with the hood up so you guys can have a listen and tell me if its the typical sounds for these engines or it something seems off.

its hard for me to tell this is my first experience with an inline 4. all my other rides so far except my jeep have been six or eight and the jeep never sounded good but i never tried to get it there either.

with this truck i want to get her back to as close to off the showroom floor as possible.

and i don't want to take the time to paint it until i get the engine sorted out.

Maybe a small vacuum leak?
