Whats up guys i have a question for you guys hopefully i could get pointed in the right direction with my problem. I recently replaced my head with a new head and installed new pistons (re-honed) the block and changed my connecting rod bearings, do to engine smoking and burning lots of oil. I also replaced my water pump and timing belt. I have driving it about 900 miles or so on these new parts runs great smooth very cool and even passed California smog. lately i have noticed that at start up the engine is real quiet after my commute to and from work (30 miles one way) i notice that my rocker assembly gets some what noisy once i exit the freeway enough where i could hear it if my window is down. could this be that my oil pump is going bad keep in mind i did not change it. Wondering if anyone has experienced any thing like this.

From what I understand, Mazda had a small oil passage in the rocker arms. The Factory was aware of the problem, and later years are said to have used a corrected(larger passages) rocker setup. Try using a lighter weight oil.

i used 40 weight to start it up then changed it around 700 miles and now i am running 10-30 and i am still having that problem i ordered a oil pressure tester it seems like its getting louder now but it could be me over analyzing it.

The rockers probably have some shellac built up inside of them and they aren't staying pumped up when you come off the freeway. You can take them off and try to clean them or maybe run some seafoam or ATF (1/2 quart) through the system or as cheap as they are, just replace them.

I don't think you have any other issues, just buildup.

i did a oil pressure test and it reads ok, at 3000 RPM i am reading about 56psi and at idle its about 17 based on the manual that's great oil pressure the window being from 43 to 58 psi at 3000 RPM. When you talk about replacing the rockers should i also replace the rocker shafts and springs on my rocker assembly?

I'm sorry I wasn't clear on this. I was referring to the hydraulic lifters but you bring up a good point, in that maybe the shafts have worn to the point that the oil pressure is dropping where the rockers join the shafts.

If the lifters get shellac in them they get partially stuck and won't stay fully pumped up.
