Hello all. I have an issue I am unsure what it is and how to stop it. Just this morning I went out and started my 93 B2200 same as I always do to go to work. But I heard a light ticking noise. At first I thought it was just a lifter as I am about 700 miles over an oil change and will be doing that today. But after pulling up next to another car I could still hear the ticking and it seems to increase in when the RPM's increase. It's never done this before since I have owned which was 3 years ago. It's an automatic and completely stock. I baby this thing as it is my daily and the only vehicle I have. I can't seem to tell exactly where it is coming from. It almost sounds like it's coming from the drivers side of the engine like in the middle between the block and head. It doesn't sound to me like a valve tick. I'm hoping once I change the oil today and maybe put in some slightly thicker oil it will go away. Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated thanks everyone.

Not clear from your post how many miles you have on your engine but the 2.2 motors are known for valve tick. Mazda put out a service bulletin telling the dealers to start using oil filters with anti-drainback valves in them to combat startup noise.

^+1 as mazdatweaker said... in the beginning changing your oil will help with the ticking but eventually they will tick all the time and should be replaced.

You are both correct. Just went to the Mazda dealership to have it checked out just to be sure. They said the exact same thing you both did. I was certain it was a lifter but they said it is more than likely a valve. Not a big issue but something that may need to be replaced eventually being I only have 115k miles on the engine. And the oild change did help I don't hear it anymore at all. Thanks again guys!

Dan,

Have you gotten around to removing all the EFI stuff I was wanting to buy from you yet?

change oil to 10w-40 and add 1/4 bottle of Seafoam. Run 500 miles, change oil again and add another 1/4 bottle of Seafoam.Always use Mazda Factory oil filters as they have valves in them to keep all the oil from draining back into the pan. Should eliminate the ticking.BJ
