I took that risk because the crankshaft journals and connecting rod bearings looked so good, and this way I didn't have to pull the engine. I don't have engine picker, engine stand, garage space, etc. And I had owned the truck 17 years by that point.
I had toured an engine rebuilding site in California, but wondered about any warranty issues (like I wouldn't be pulling the engine and sending back for a thermostat cover leak !!!), how they would really be handled. I got two local quotes, one was $2300 just to rebuild the engine, not R&R.
