I have never changed a timing chain on a 2600i. I would think that it would be tons easier with the engine pulled. I think Axel Breaker Earl has experience with this. Do you have a Haynes manual or a Chiltons? There should be plenty of information in either of those.

Yes, you will have to drop the oil pan to remove your timing chain cover on the B2600i engines. The front timing cover is a large aluminum cover that actually houses the oil pump for the engine, and if you ever need to replace that oil pump, then you have to buy that whole timing cover, as that's the only way you can buy it.......that I've found anyway.
Because the timing cover houses the oil pump, therefore the oil pump pick-up tube is bolted to the oil pump with three 10mm bolts. That tube runs down and towards the rear of the engine and it is braced near the end of it where the strainer is with a small bracket that has a 10mm bolt holding it to the windage tray or lower cover that is inside the oil pan.........so you can't remove the front timing cover until you drop the oil pan and remove the 10mm bolt that is holding the oil pump pick-up tube.

I'll add a link to another thread here that has plenty of pictures showing this.

OK, here is the link to a thread with pics.

yup the bolt that holds the oil pickup tube to the vibration damper is directly in the middle. removing of the pan is a must to be able to remove the time chain cover oh yeah and thats interestinsting about the pump only being available w/ cover i'll try to pic me one up next time im at the yard thanks Earl

Hi, I've just discovered a water leak coming from the front of the engine in my old Mazda/Ford. I fear it's coming from the timing cover. Does one have to remove the head to get the timing cover off?
