1984 ignition switch (MA engine) NEW GUY NEEDS HELP!

I was working on pulling my ignition switch to take it to the locksmith to have a new key made for it (long story). Everything was going well until the wires connected to the back of it broke at the soldering points.

Can these be soldered back in or would it be easier to find a junkyard switch with a key? The new switches available online do not have the white box/wiring harness included. What is this harness called so I can ask for the right one?

What years are compatible with a 1984 model? it has the MA engine. There is a salvage yard near by that has a 1982 B-series. Would one from a 1982 work? They also have 1986 models.

If you know how to solder, then I would do that. It wont hurt anything. Might actually make it better. lol

Solder it if you can, you've got absolutely nothing to lose by trying. Wear eye protection.

I just soldered two $3 relays onto a home furnace fan circuit board, figured there was nothing to lose there as well...

I had the same problem on the later version ignition where that "Key in Ignition" switch is located on the front. Yes, you can solder it. You'll need to pop the retainer nuts off to get the switch of the main body. When you do, you'll destroy them and won't be able to re-use them. So you can try to find some locally, but I couldn't; even try to order some assorted ones online - no luck. So if you can't find any, then just get yourself some tie-wraps and tie it back on.

If you open the switch gently, it will come apart without any trouble. You'll want to clean the contact points of the switch while you have it apart.

If you're not worried about the "Key in Ignition" buzzer, then you don't even have to bother with it.

Ace Hardware near me has little push-nuts in the little drawers.

Wow!

Thanks for the great tutorial and all of the help guys. I ended up finding a replacement at pull-a-part before seeing your replies. Now I'll have an extra if I need it.
