Hello, for around a year or so I've had a starting issue with my 1991 mazda b2200 FI. When I turn the key sometimes I hear a single click per time I turn the key. Sometimes it starts right up without making the single click. It doesn't matter what gear I'm in or whether the engine is hot or cold. It is totally random clicking. Sometimes I'll have to turn the key 10+ times before it starts. I've checked the ground for the starter, replaced the starter and solenoid, and rewired the wires that go to the starter. Also, when it does click you can hear the starter motor working if you continue to keep the key in the starting position. Well, I believe it's the starter motor working. The starter and solenoid is good, tested at autozone many times and passes easily. I'm not quite sure what the problem could be. If any of you have any idea please let me hear it. Thanks!

Just a quick thought. That sounds like you might have a bad ignition switch. There are several write ups in the area describing symptoms and how to repair/replace.I cannot advise further and sure some who have done the above can pinpoint to it.Unless maybe your coil is going bad which could duplicate the problem. You will need a multimeter to check the voltage on the coil to verify the specs.

Replacing the ignition switch electrical part won't hurt, that's for sure, with the age of the truck.

But I didn't see anywhere about battery testing, unless I missed it. The issue is failure of the engine to crank/spin. So next time this happens, I'd try a jump start from another vehicle. I'd also be interested in the voltage across the battery terminals 10 seconds into trying to start/engine "clicking". Post that, you need to test battery under load.

Drop the plastic lower cover and check the electrical part of your ignition switch for blobby solder joints . . . it sounds like a 23 year old part has started to fail.

I would also recommend a jumper switch test on the starter while it is installed, which will bypass the ignition switch for purposes of testing.

I have the exact same problem on my '87. I just fixed it about 3 hours ago, I bought a new ignition switch and for the most part solved the problem. Now it starts without fail the SECOND time i hit the key, but without fail, which is a lot better than it was (37 key turns later). It may completely solve the for you or may have the same two turn issue I don't know. The part is $116 at O'Reilly and its a relatively simple install. Hope it helps.
