I need some general help troubleshooting power steering on my truck. Fluid level looks fine on it. I don't hear it making the whine I have come to recognize as a failing power steering pump. But, I am definitely getting a good arm workout driving it around town!

I also my 92 in the driveway that I can snag the pump off of if necessary (I think they're the same), but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking something simple first.

Thanks!

Hey Cory,

I assume your fluid isn't burned/is good, the pulley rotates as it should and you have a good belt adjusted properly. If the fluid is old/contaminated it may cause the pump not to work properly.

I don't recall ever hearing a PS pump on one of these trucks going bad. I'd make sure this one is really dead before you swap parts. You'll need to make sure the pump is actually pumping.

Thanks for the tips . . . turns out I just needed to tighten the tensioner on the belt a little bit and I was back in business.

If you drove it for any length of time with the belt loose, it really should be replaced.
