interference?

are these engines interference engines? i was drivin last night and the truck just died. broke the timing belt. wasnt gettin on it or anything just normal driving. i hope there not cuz the engine doesnt have but about 25 thousand miles on it.

On my most recent repair, at the shop, the guy said that they are interferance motors.

I quote, "I've never heard of any import engine as a non-interferance motor".

Yet, as I look in this chiltons manual of mine, and it says it is not a interferance motor.

So I say, WTF is wrong with mechanics these days?

The old guys that know what they are doing "usually" don't like imports and the young guys only have half the schooling and usually more of a know it all attitude and pretty much don't know shit from putty. Just a general observation, not meant to step on anyones toes.

yeh just talked to ken the guy that mods the mazdatruckin.com and he says there not. ima buy a belt and see what happens.

Mazda actually knew what they where doing when they built an engine and made it non interferance!

no these arent interference engines. and not all imports are either. most anything newer is more likely to be interference as engineers push the envelope for power and fuel economy and with varible valve timing now days. i know older toyotas arent interference either UNTIL they started making V.V.T.I engines.
and to HeX0rz, there are a lot of shops that are out to get money or will just say anything when they arent sure of something....but not all are bad. but i can definetley understand where you are coming from.

Whats the difference between interference and non-interference motors? Never heard that term before.

the valves are closer the the tops of the pistons, usally in higher compression motors or dohc motors, if the timming belt were to snap, the pistions could smack the valves and cause them to bend and ruin rocker assembly, and possibly popping a hole in a piston

if your timing belt breaks and nothing internally is damaged then it is a non interference engine. if its an interference engine them most likely the piston will hit one of the valves and either bend it or break it off usually causing detonation.
