ok i dont have time to search at the moment nore would i even begin to think of where to look... ok so problem started wednesday i was driving to my girlfriends house and all of a sudden i lose power on flat ground and i hear this clicking or ticking noise coming from the hood... as i keep driving the truck dies and i cranked it back over just to have it die again... so i pulled off to the side of the road and look it over with a flash light one of my heater hoses close to the firewall ripped open... got that fixed but im having starting issues it will crank over and crank over but wont fire up... i tried replacing the cap and rotor thinking that might be the problem but its not... i really dont have the money for a starter or alternator if either of those are the problem ill be out for awhile but if any of ya can give me an idea of different shit to look at, id be greately appreciative... and if any of you are close enough to SA id buy ya a beer or two HAHA gotta bust out the bribes OH YEAH. anyways for real though if ya could give me an idea of what to look for then thanks.... oh and i did get the hose fixed if any of ya was wondering =o) thanks in advance

Have you checked your plugs or fuel filter yet? I would start there to atleast get the simple things out of the way. Is your truck an F.I. or Carbed?

dude sounds EXACTLY like my problem

its Timing.... if it turns over and just keeps turning over and then it cuts out try ajusting the timing.... mine did it to me today again and it was because my cap got loose causing my rotor to slip off... which in turn jumped time.... ajust your distributor and see what happens

ok well i forgot to mention before that the ticking was only during acceleration so i dunno about that... as far as the timing thing my cap and what not was tight when i had checked it when i first got the vehicle... would there be some way that the rotor could be misaligned and how could i retime it without a timing light??? cuz i dont got one of those i know i need one but im not a major mechanic or anything.

heres what i did... i pulled the top timing cover off and turned the key untill the number one cylinder pointed almost straight up then i pulled the distributor cap off and pulled the distributor up until the rotor unlocked then you turn the rotor bug to face the first cylinder.... put the cap on and see if it fires if not just keep pulling up the dizzy and turn the rotor a tiny bit clockwise untill it will let you drop it back in and see if it will fire from there... i know it sounds ghetto but hey man it works... i have gotten mine to fire twice doing that... and the reason i did it twice is because my cap came loose allowing my rotor to come up and strike the points and strip out the center of the rotor Thats WHY my truck jumped time... now she runs good again

no i got home from work last night and was just worn out so i endedu p sleeping till 1 30 lol im about to jump on it cuz my mom said that it could be my cat clogged up or something which mighta caused the build up in pressure that popped my heater hose... anyways im gonna go dink around with it a litle before work... and see what happens.

first off if your rotor comes off the distributor its not gonna jump time or change any coorelation of the dizzy with the cam. and when you find top dead center there is a dimple and line on the distributor that will put you exactly where you need to be when lined up. the ticking you are hearing is most likely a lifter. sounds like you have either blown a headgasket or a fuel pump. possibly trash in the filter or carb. check your oil and see if it looks milky at all. check your coolant to see if it looks oily or foamy. see what your fuel filter looks like. and then go from there. if it turns over fine then it isnt your starter. and if you still have plenty of power then its not your alt because it would have killed any stored power then causing it to die. just start with these things and then go from there. let us know so we can help.
