I know Im a noob and this has prolly been beat to death on this site, But what are you guys running for oil. I got this truck last Tues, and he told me it needed an oilchange, So I changed it Thurs with some 10w-30 and it started ticking and loosing a little oil etc. Plus the oil still looked dirty, So yesterday I did a motor flush, And changed it to 10w40 high mileage and some Lucas, Now on cold start it ticks like HELL and smokes, Did the flush clean up the motor to cause blowby? And you think the oil is too thick with the lucas?

when u change filters, use either a Maz factory filter or a Wix (i think). They have little flaps in them that keep the oil from completely draining down from the lifters.Dry lifters = AM ticking.Plus word on Toddlucks post above.all these old trucks smoke a little on cold starts.BJ

Mine Ticks in the am I ran some quaker state high milage bad idea i guess smokes worse. I find that 10w-40 valvoline with lucas works the best. Valvoline has parafin wax in it but i figure as much as these trucks burn it off it's not that bad lol.

I use Valvoline straight 40 weight, part #165. year round, but I'm in Arizona (only 110 degrees today, in the shade - if you can find some !!!).

I would only run the 40W in a hot climate like arizona where it's probably thinned out a lot with the heat.

something tells me that thinner oil would help lifter tick...

My experience with thinner oil has been slim. thicker seems to work the best since it helps pump up the lifters. That thin crap just don't cut it for sealing.

Well this thing wasnt ticking too bad the first 2 days I owned this thing, till I changed the oil, I changed it with some NAPA 10w30 I had laying around, and the tapping started, So I did a motor flush and changed it again with the 10w40 Penzoil High Mileage (Penzoil is the special this month at my 2nd job) and Lucas and the tapping continued and got worse at start up, but isnt leaking it off as much now
