Hey guys, well I just purchased an 86 mazda b2000 and yesterday as I was driving on the freeway the engine just died. I pulled over and looked under the hood, the timing belt cover is busted at the top and I could see the timing belt busted and also the top gear. I am wondering why the top gear busted like it did and can this be an easy fix?

Hmm, you mean to say the cam sprocket broke?

Other then that, the motor should be a non-interferance and all it needs is to be re-synched in the timing and put on the new belt!

Did the bolt on the cam sprocket bust? I'm not sure on how it would break? Pics?

yah the timing belt cover busted at the top and I can see in it and noticed the top cam sprocket is broken as well as the timing belt Ill try and get a pic.

WOW! I for one 'am completely AMAZED!

Well, I can't really tell you if the motor is interferance or not, but my guess is that it is'nt. My manual only goes as early as '87. :\

Someone here should be able to tell you though... Get a new sprocket, cover, and belt. Pretty easy fix as long as it is'nt interferance!

interferance like? Ive never done timing belt or at least didnt deal with re lining up the marks. Im pretty sure its off now from the looks of it.

ok i took off what was left of the timing belt cover and noticed that the timing belt did not bust. The cam sprocket did tho

i think the sproket broke and snapped the belt easy fix man

Interferance motors are engines where if the timing belt or chain breaks while engine is running can cause the camshaft and crankshaft to go out of timing. The rpms left over when the timing belt breaks causes them to still spin and the cam will open the valves. As this happens the crank is still rotating and when out of synch with each other causes the valves to hit the face of the piston. Which therein means your head could get reeally screwed up!

o yah yah I read up on that, Im hoping that wasnt the case and its just a simple fix of replacing that sprocket and timing belt. Im just wondering but is there any way you can install the cam sprocket where its not suppose to be....the sprocket not lined up with the actually cam?
