okay I thought I would through this up while I still have internet.

My engine has a 2.2 rebuilt short block with 60,800 on it. My head is new with 800 miles on it.

The block was professionally done at a machine shop here in town that has been around forever.

What I can't figure out is why my truck uses about a half quart every 300-400 miles. It's not leaking and leaving drips in the driveway. But at the same time it's not blowing blue smoke at all, no matter how hard you mash the skinny pedal.

I need to do a compression test I guess? I mean I'm starting to think it's a rotary in 4 cylinder clothing. Or is this just a general mazda engine thing?

mine uses quite a bit as well.... during the course of a moth i use almost a quart of oil.... dunno where it goes... im guessing the exhaust.... its just not enough to where its heavy smoke

yeah that's sounds a lot like mine about a quart a month just driving to work and around town.
Yesterday we took it on a 350-375 mile trip and low and behold used 3/4 quart of oil.

my thoughts are piston rings

yeah maybe

I know that my oil goes up the pipe from the valve cover and down the carb and is burned up with no smoke. I am thinking of replacing it with one of those little k&n filters so it won't use so much.

my 2.6 does the same thing. it burns a lot of oil but not a bunch at a time so you can't really see it out the tail pipe but thats where its going. you can do a leak down test and see if your rings are stuck.

demonspawn, I just bought the little filter and installed one of those little filters half way in the Saturday trip, but it didn't seem to help too much.

If oil is accumalating inside the air filter housing I say the rings are worn. I had a B2600 that did that until I replaced the rings.

no not really what's going on. I just did the little filter mainly to keep cleaning up appearance of the motor
