Valve stem seals

Can the seals be replaced without removing the head and if so how i get smoke after an overnight set on thes cool mornings i think this is the problem because i can smell the oil burning it quits after about a minute

Please revise the last part of your post they smoke because of the stem seals leaking they are made of rubber so they don't last forever mine are in need of changing as for replacing them you can get a device that compresses the valves with an air compressor or there is also the rope method where you feed a rope into the cylinder and rotate it up to the top

where can i get the tool to compress the valves with air

This is not a simple job.

I have done it a couple times on different trucks.

You will need about six hours if you have never done one before.

You will have to adjust your valves afterwards if you have mechanical adjusters.

If you don't know what I am talking about, you are not qulified to do this work.

Tweaker is right! This is not a task for a normal do-it-yourselfer. This job is very critical and time consuming (s/p?). If not carefull you can destroy the upper valve train and in some cases even the engine.

if it needs seal and you can change out a head gasket just take the head to the machine shope have it resurfaced and thave the seals and valve guides done as well save future headaches

the motor has over 200k miles would it be a good idea to go ahead and put new rings in as well

I guess now the task of finding someone i can trust do to the head work will be my starting point just want it done right
