yah i have done the swap and i used a 1st gen rx7 tranny and swapped the bellhousing and tail housing(along with the shifter forks) check out page 11- 14 of my build on mazdatruckin.com

So then the rx-7 transmission can be used with the fe3 also. Good to know

An 86 naturally aspirtated tranny should work. Here is a bit more info on RX7 transmissions: .
