So I am done rebuilding my motor and am about to put the head back on but I see the head only has 1 dowell pin (I think that's what it's called?) It's the short metal tube that some of the head studs go through between the block and head. They are put there to keep the head aligned correctly with the block. How many should be on there? I assume 4 (mine only had 1, no friggin wonder the previous owner blew the head gasket), and where can I get them? Thanks guys...

Here is where the DOWEL PINS should be located. I am going to Mazda in the morning to see if I can pick them up...

I just put my head on the other day and if I remember right, looking from the front , only the front left and right rear has them. Lemme see if I got a pic with the head off.

Sorry, its the two end holes on the left (oil filter side). Im preety sure I was the first to remove the head on my engine and mines only had those two.

Not having the dowl pins in there will not cause your head gasket to blow. Lack of retorquing the head after initial break in, specially the bolts on the exhaust side. The dowls just help you guide the head onto the block. But you can still put the head on carefully without the gasket shifting out of place.

the guy just did the head gasket and it leaked immediately... i think it shifted b/c there was oil in the water.. not alot but enough that it ticked me off

Thanks guys, helped immensely. They were $3 each at Mazda, and they confirmed only 2 like you said. Cheers!
