Driving to work today in my 87 b2000... I was stopping at a stop sign and was clutching into 1st while rolling. I must have missed the gear because it made a clunk sound when I stopped and then the transmission was in nuetral. Didn't think anything of it because it clutched and shifted fine for about 3 miles to the highway and 20 miles to work. When I got to my exit and made the few starts and stops to work, I noticed it took me pressing the clutch hard into the floor just to engage. So, I get off of work and noticed that there is a huge puddle of liquid under my truck. First instinct is to check the oil and it is full to the mark. So, I get in the truck and the clutch pedal goes all the way to the floor and sticks at the bottom... I said some happy words and then I managed to get the truck home with no clutch.

So where do I start, I just bought the truck last week and have no idea how old any of the clutch parts are. I searched for similar topics and read a little about the clutch slave cylinder? I have the mechanical ability but just need a little direction due to lack of experience with the mazda.

Thanks in advance.

Ok, for starters can you get under then truck? If so see if you can tell where the brake fluid (thats what goes in the clutch system) is coming from? The slave cylinder is on the passenger side bolted to the bell housing. Typically the slave will not just fail - usually they leak for a while. Most likely the rubber hose that connects to the slave cylinder failed. If the leak is on the drivers side then maybe the metal line from the clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinder rusted thru and failed. Have a look and keep us posted.

My piddley .02 cents worth. . .

The slave cylinder is probably blown.

Weakest link in the system.

Open the hood.

Walk around to the passenger side of the truck.

Go to the firewall and look straight down.

Your puddle will be there, most likely.

(supply happy words of your choice here)

Tools needed.

14mm line wrench / open end, to break loose fluid supply line.

12mm box wrench or socket to remove slave from transmission.

10 or 8mm box wrench for bleeding system after installing new slave.

one of these:

You might be able to rent / borrow one out of an Autoparts loan-a-tool program.

Here's an overview:

Patience.

If you turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, it will open up the hole on the passenger side so you can get to the slave from underneath if you need to.

You will have to remove the slave after breaking the line loose, to remove it from the slave.

If you have a partner in crime, they might be able to help you bleed the system. . .but I think you will find better results faster if you use a vacuum bleeder.

Welcome to Mazda B ownership. . .

. . .and the forum.

sounds like the answer to my problem also. happened to me yesterday. fluid was empty. added fluid and now leaks on passenger side.

thanks for the info.

All the fluid is leaking from the passenger side.... I looked at where I parked before this happened and no leak what so ever (good sign). So Im hoping that it might be the hose. Also, are these parts normally stocked through an autoparts store. Don't know if the hose might be a dealer only item.

Thanks again guys!!! And I will keep yall updated.

Update.... So me and bro-in-law started working on the truck at 5pm today. We first found the fluid coming from the slave cylinder, took the rubber boot loose and fluid poured out of it. Took it off and off to the parts store we went. Autozone had one in stock and back home we went. Had it installed in no time and started to try a bleed the system... Clutch pedal still went to the floor and would come back up, being rookies we immediatly thought that the master cyliner was bad also. Couldn't find a line wrench so we were off to the parts store we went. Picked up a line wrench and the master cylinder while we were there. Got back home and broke the line loose and pumped the pedal with little fluid coming out. We switched the master cylinder out and began trying to bleed the system. Still the pedal didn't seem to have anything, I began to get frustated and worried but had hope. Finally we noticed that the fluid level was going down and we started to get a pedal back. Clutch is now working like a champ with a new master and slave cylinder.

You guys will be seeing me in the suspension topics because Im about to do all new bushings and ball joint since today I noticed they are were cracked and in bad shape.

Thanks guys for your help!!! I now have confidence that I made a good buy and hopefully will have a good affordable running truck for awhile. Im roughly $1600 into the truck -- $1200 intial, $320 for tires, and $80 today on the clutch parts. My neighbor stopped today and told me that he wants to paint it for me because he had a mazda when he was younger and that he would only charge me for materials. I thought he was kidding but he said he wants to do it just to bring back memories. So im off to a good start!!!
