The 2.6 CURSE.......

I have a 1987 B2600 4x4 5 speed single cab with a few problems. The motor knocks in a sort of tat sound. the guy i bought the truck from said he thought it was a rod making the noise. When i took the valve cover off i noticed the timing chain was very loose, so i put a new chain and guide kit in. after putting the whole front back together and starting it, it still knocked. I have since took it to my cousins in Amelia, VA to have him pull the motor for me. So, i have a few ?'s. What do you think the problem is? What kind of simular problems have you had with a 2.6? Im looking into a weber carb, so what model is best suited for my truck? I have also been informed that these are famouse for blowing head gaskets, due to milky oil im almost certain mine is blown. So What ya think(besides i bought a pos) lol. thanks for the help.

I think the previous owner told you exactly the truth.

The head gasket blew, which allowed water into the oil, which then thinned out the oil, preventing it from lubricating the bearings.

The bearing material got stripped off the interior of the shell, which opened up a clearance which is now being hammered everytime the particular piston gets lit off.

You can test this by disconnecting one plug at a time and seeing if the sound goes away.

That is how you can isolate the particular cylinder.

You need a crankshaft kit to fix a problem like this. . .and since you need a head gasket anyway. now would be the best time to go ahead and replace the rings too.

At least you didn't sling a rod. . .so the engine is a rebuildable core.

thanks man makes perfect since. i was pretty sure i would need a new crankshaft and what not. And yea i was very surprised i didnt throw a rod. Thanks for your help.

if u rebuild,that is a Mitsu motor,not a Maz mota.All kinds of goodies out there from the Mitsu TSi and Conquest that will fit that motor.BJ
