My first 86 did this, as does the 87 I drive now. But that isn't all this post is about....
The 87 had some leaks around the second catalytic converter and the muffler shop wanted to replace the cat too, they said it was clogged. They did, and the truck ran GREAT for a while but was popping when I'd let off the gas in gear but only once or twice each time. Then it went back to not popping anymore and lost the extra boost of power it had. I'm assuming the cat is clogged again. Any idea what kind of carb issue would cause this? Somehow I think it's connected to the black smoke on hot starts. It gets 24ish mpg. I have rebuilt the engine, and it no longer has any piston ring or valve seal issues, it's definitely rich smoke. Thanks for any input.
