so i went to pick her up last nite and as we pulled outta her driveway the mud puppy died. sat there crankin and crankin. it finally started, made it bout 1/4 mile and it died. finally got it goin again and made it the 20 miles home. so we go to leave and git dinner it wont start. tried this mornin before work and it would just crank and crank. no fire at all. think its the coil? gotta git it runnin for my friend to rebuild the front end.

Time for a fuel delivery diagnosis.

Check for a clogged fuel filter.

I know you said no fire.

But did you verify that or is that just some ambiguity you are using as a code word for non starting generically.

If it is ignition related. . .what did you do to get that conclusion?

well i still got fuel comin thru the pump, thru the filter and can smell it comin out the tailpipe. brand new filter. i'm thinkin its the coil and no fire cuz i did put a junkyard coil on a few months back to git it runnin and seem to be havin the same problem now as it did before i swapped for the JY coil.

coil? ignition control module? ignition relay fuse? ecu? is mud puppy carby or FI?

measure across the coil small positive and small negative... you should have 12 volts on then on on then off... when trying to start
primary coil:
measure resistance between the small positive and small negative
record your resistance (.3 to 3 ohms is within operating range)
secondary coil:
measure resistance from the small positive and the center plug hole.
record your resistance values. (4000 ohms to 30,000 ohms is within operating range)
since you smell fuel from the tail pipe... pull all of the plugs seperately and see if they are wet with fuel and fouled out.
get you a fuel pressure gauge and measure the fuel pressure after it has had the ignition turned on for a few seconds (you might have"fuel" just not enough to sustain the engine under load ... meaning you might have enough fuel to idle but not to actually drive it

You might have to pull the ignition module and get it tested somewhere.

welp i got it. been kinda busy with work and the house and the girl and all.

i'm a genuis so bear with me!

i got bored and decided i'd do it the old fashion way of checkin the coil. well the battery was dead so i jumped it with the ol' man's car. well didn't work. swapped out for another battery. boltin the terminals on, i almost blew up cuz i let the wrench cross 'em. got a nice zap then i took the coil wire and held onto it (need a star on my helmet for this idear) and held it near the fender bolt and cranked the key. SWEET! I GOTS SPARK!!!

ZAP ZAP ZAP ZAP!!!!

hahahaha i moved just a bit and it quit sparkin on the fender and went thru me into the key! hahahahahahahahahahahahaaha

but anyways to finish the story, the positive cable was corroded real bad and kinda loose. took it apart, cleaned it and put her back togehter. ran fine. thanks for the help tho guys.

one last question. theres a lil black box ontop the gas tank (its a FI motor) and it had fallen down the side of the tank and the driveshaft wore a lil hole in it. filled up the other nite and gas was leakin outta this box. what the hell is this box?! this truck has so many damn weird parts.
