Why is a fuel filter located where it is. . . ?
Probably for a couple reasons.
A mechanical pump pulls fuel.
A electric pump pushes fuel.
A mechanical pump generates 3-5 psi.
An electrical pump can generate far more.
A mechanical pump pulls fuel through a filter.
An electrical pump pushes fuel through a filter.
Junk and debris get caught a lot earlier in the line of an electrical pump setup.
I would have said something clever like "The pump creates pulsations that the filter dampens, preventing line resonation" but that wouldn't matter enough to be a universal factor. Other makes, models and manufacturers have the filter in all kinds of weird places.
So maybe Mazda wanted to be like them.
