having some problems gettin my truck runnin, i know i'm gettin fuel, i think my spark is a little weak. the truck turns over just fine but won't fire at all, then time after time of tryin it'll finally start to fire. then i'll manage to get it runnng for a couple mins and then it just dies. i've tried a couple sets of plug wires with no difference, also takin the plug wire from the coil and there dosen't seem to be a consisten spark coming from it like there should be.

so i tried a new coil and still nothing. it ran fine last summer and fall but i haven't ran it much this winter

any ideas will help, thanks

do you have a spark tester? a screwdriver shoved into the coil wire will show a spark, but it might not be enough of a spark.

is the coil factory or an aftermarket coil?

factory coil, i did the screw driver test but it was very mild, only saw a few sparks

You've probly already checked but hows the timing? Cap and rotor?

i'm gonna get it all to top dead center tommorow, i can't really check the timing cause when i plated the pullies it got rid of the timing lines

and that will end up being your problem check the contacts on the cap and rotor, your timing could be bang on but the cap and rotor could be shot.

I had this problem when I plated the pulleys on my old Datsun. I wound up getting a stock pulley from a junk yard and engraving the marks into the chrome. What a PIA. You should get close by ear though.

i had it set pretty good by ear but now when i'm lucky enough to get it started i seem to get it runnin good with a good idle and then it just dies and won't start again

well if you think you have it set close.... loosen the dist. hold down bolt and while cranking SLOWLY turn the dizzy either way and see if that helps. but more than likely seeing as you don't know for sure that your truck is timed correctly here is a trick:

pop the valve cover off
disconnect the battery.....
turn the crank until both valves on the #1 cylinder are both closed (tdc)
then look for the timing marks on the front of the engine. use white out or a dark fingernail polish to mark where you are set at by eyeballing it as it sits now.
then you can start adjusting the dizzy and seeing if thet brings you closer or moves you further away.

lmk

btw... truck is looking sick i need to get off my ass and back onto mine, as i keep staring at my rendering!
