Hello,
New to this group. I've spent hours (I mean HOURS) on the internet trying to find help, with no avail. My 1986 B2000 (now with the typical replacement crap that we all replace looking for an easy solution: plug wires, plugs, dist. cap, and rotor cap, air cleaner, and fuel filter) -- and still have the problem: Bucking, sputtering -- really bad on start-up, and shifting into second gear.

NOTE: I read a guys same symptoms on one of the posts (I think it was way back in 2006) and he had (what seems to be the same exact same problem).

Also worth noting is I just got back from a 600 trip, when this issue started (during the long trip). Got back from trip and noticed the exhust manifold and pre-cat gaskets were shot. Had them replaced (that should have been the mechanics clue that there was something else wrong, but he simply changed the gaskets -- which didn't fix the problem.

My mechanic thinks the pre-cat (or the cat) are fowled and need replacement. My mechanic wants to gut the pre-cat, and cat, and run a header -- but I can't due to emissions.

THE QUESTION for you the group are:
- I am not 100% sure it is the Pre-Cat, or the Cat, but Do You know of a failry easy way to check them?

There is definate back pressure, and loss of power, and I really don't think it isn't the carb. The pre-cat is about $250.00us (ouch) and the cat about $75.00. Thanks for your help on this matter.
