a/c help

hi guys need help with an a/c related issue. when i push my a/c button the light comes on the button but my compressor clutch dont engage. but i can run a wire from the heater to the clutch wire and it engages so im guessing maybe bad relay. question is where is the a/c relay and whats it look like

ya that sounds like the relay but i dont remember where it was, its been so long sence i had ac...lol

If you haven't put a set of gauges on it to verify that yo have enough freon in it, then the problem might be there isn't enough freon in it to operate the system properly.

In other words, the relay (if any) isn't the problem.

Lack of R-12 has allowed the internal gas pressure to drop far enough to open the compressor anti-frag circuit.

Well I put freon in it and it wouldn't kick the compressor on so I straight wired it come to find out the hose right behind the grill is dry rotted and has a big crack in it. Took it off and run down the wire from the compressor it runs up to a relay bolted on the intake manifold but the wire from the compessor when it comes back into the engine bay on the passenger side looks like some one clipped the wire in 2 and put conectors on it to disconnect i guess. But the two were disconected so its not even hooked to the relay. Guess this was done when the hose busted on previous owner. So if anyone has the large hose that runs right behind the grill its like 18 inches long one female end and one male end let me know. Or im going monday or tuesday to get one made cause napa here in town couldnt make it

This answer provides an excellent example as to why putting a set of gauges on a normally hermetically sealed system is a really good idea, prior to wasting time and money on freon that costs money to package and destroys ozone when released.
