Somewhat of a newbe to the mazda's but not to motors. The little truck has been getting around 20 lbs of oil pressure at idle and higher when running up through the rpms. last few days have noticed a steady decrease in pressure down to around 5 lbs at idle and not close to 20 runin through the rpms. Also, the engine although has no visible signs of an oil leak was a quart low tonight. have not noticed any smoke. Did notice that the pcv breather was so hot it was smoking. previous owner said the motor was rebuilt but i am beginin to wonder

So my question is this. do the mazda motors normaly run on lower oil pressures?

it being a quart low will give you the low oil pressure.

chances are it got hot and low pressure from being a quart low and also chances are you have leaky valve seals not leaking enough to see smoke but when your driving it is smoking just not enough to where you can see it ....start by toppin off the oil and see how long it takes to get low again

yeah like todd said, when its cold it will have higher pressure. Hell my s10 has 40 at idle and 60 while driving when cold. once it warms up its usually about 15 and 30ish. It being a quart low will hurt it more than you think it would.

Ran hottttt again today on just a short ten mile trip. noticed oil around the area of the fill tube. no water in oil thinkin maybe water pump goin bad.... still good on oil levels today

in the worse case it might be the start of a blown head gasket

or could be a stupid thermostat problem, or fan clutch or even a fluid flush

the water pump dont usually go for crap, unless there leaking or the impeller is broken inside but that would make it overheat real fast
