stalling

a friend has a 89 b2200 pu. he was pulling out driveway and it putterd then died. when trying to start, as long as you hold the key in the start position it stays running. when you let go of the key to setel in the run position it dies. do ya have any hints as to where I should start looking for the problem ? I havent got to the pu yet . thought I would try to get some imput tonight before I go to it tomorrow. would aprisiate and ideas. thanx

But I'm gonna say the ignition switch shit the bed
The best way to find out is taking a test light to the wires at the igniton and at the coil, turn thr key to the on position and see if your getting power there

Electrical part of the ignition switch, symptoms are 100% in-line with that.

hey, just wanted to say thanx. I went and took a look at my friends truck and pulled the ignition out of the callum and the plastic in side was cracked . So I hot-wired the ignition - wire from the posative on coil to posative on battery - and turned the ignition switch with a screwdriver and she started right up .wiggled the switch and the accesories came on too, which proved it was the switch.The hot wire kept it from stalling, if the heater fan stops , he knows to wiggle switch so it comes on again.he got his truck home and thanx ya very much. he will bring me new parts to install for him today. just wanted to say thanx
