Hi guys,

I just dropped my transmission to do a clutch job as well as an oil pan gasket replacement and was wondering what type of gear oil everyone uses or recommends. What type GL-4 or GL-5, Syn.. or standard gear oil... 1 qt. of Redline Gear oil MT90 is about 11 bucks where i live at and standard 80w/90 is around 5-6 (Walmart). I have searched but nothing really popped out.

Ok I have used the 75w90 (GL5) in mine for the last 25yrs and use the coastal brand from auto zone.Advance sells the same.I would not suggest going synthetic just bc I tried it and only advantage was in winter time, but no real gains other wise.I also have tried like valvolines durablend (sucks) and cost more too.Just changing the gear oil in a shorter time frame seems to work better for (ME) and so easy to do.I also suggest running the same in your rear diff and you might as well change that too while your at it.And if you have not reinstalled the tranny yet do your rear main seal!!

Guys in the xb's claim to see a worth it effect when they change to synthetic in their transmissions... An increase in mpg effect. They also use or do a change over to synthetic for the motor oil as well, once again they are seeing improved mpgs... quite a few have gone from the epa estimated mpg of 28city/33highway to 40+ mpg average to one guy getting 54.9mpg. Granted some of this comes from changing ones driving habits/style, but guys who regularly drive the same everywhere who then changed from reg fluids to synthetic were able to report increased mpg after the change.

Plus synthetic might be more expensive, but 10k-15k between oil changes would be cool with me...

On a liability note: switching from reg oil to synthetic can pose a problem.... Oil passages becoming clogged. The advise I've read is to do the change over in parts. Run part reg oil, part synthetic, change at normal 3k interval or sooner. Change oil again, this time more synthetic than reg oil. Another short interval, but longer than the first time between changes. Final time full synthetic with a new filter (new filter every time because as you run the synthetic, the synthetic cleans every where in the motor out touches, i.e. cleans off sludge and carbon from inside the motor) and run it but check levels regularly, and if you are low and only top off with synthetic you should be easily able to go 10-15k between oil changes. And you wont have to flush the oil system again. Once again this is just information I've read, but do have full intentions tio one day try the information for myself. Especially if I ever rebuild my motor...

I see, thanks for the infos. I have changed the rear main seal as well as the gasket for the housing over it.

I've used Valvoline 80W-90 gear oil in both the 5-speed and the rear differential. I got the little pump that screws onto the Valvoline container. If you warm the new gear oil a little it pumps easier (not a real issue here where I am). 190K now.
