I've been looking at buying a mazda for a couple of months now and a few have come and gone. But im really interested in this one that has a great body but the guy says it smokes badly. Idk alot about mazdas I've always had s10's, but I've noticed I see smoking and tapping noise to be unusual for the older b's. Are the issues a quick fix? I know my worst case is a complete over haul. But im just curious to what is the common cause for the smoking and knocking. Any help would be great, thanks guys!!

In short yes the 86-93 have the annoying lifter tick. Some change over to the adjustable lifters from the 86 models. Now for the smoking that can be either the valve stems and or rings. No real quick fixes aside from running better oil,and good filter and as for oil additives I stay away from those.A true rebuild normally addresses the smoking and or tick generally.Oh the 87-93 have hydraulic valves and are non adjustable.

So even the hydraulic lifters tap as well?

hydrolic ones tap more than mechanical. most of the time u can adjust the mechanical ones to get rid of the tick. unless they are really worn

It's common for the B2000 and B2200 engines to smoke as they approach 150K miles. Typically the valve stem seals go, but also the piston oil control ring (lowest ring) seems to lose its expansion qualities or gets stuck in the piston groove, so it smokes.

The real fix is to re-do the rings and the cylinder head. On my '88, I went with new pistons, and added new connecting rod bearings while I was in there. That was Oct. 2011, and I drive mine every day.

I estimate at least 98% of the smoking is gone. Before the rebuild, I would remove the spark plugs once each month and clean them using a drill/wire wheel attachment. I've looked at the spark plugs now, and haven't had to clean them at all in 1.5 years, they look good.

I spent $700 out of pocket to do mine, did it with the engine remaining in the truck (I did not do main bearings, my connecting rod bearings and crank journals looked like day one). I did replace the little coolant hoses too while I was in there, machine shop did the cylinder head.

Where did you get the parts from? And is there a way to completely get rid of the smoking? I can live with 98% though..lol. this truck will be my daily, but im somewhat of a perfectionist when it comes to my trucks/cars. My overall plans is to build a really nice looking/riding daily that will eventually be bagged. So far, Ive ordered a complete drop kit for it and in the process of finding a set of eskies, or possible set of nonchrome 18's. Thanks fir all the help guys.

In my 87 b2600 i had a nice tapping sound coming from the head as well. All i did was keep changing oil until i found an oil that stopped the tapping. I also have hydrolic valves in my truck. Im running Valvoline max life high mileage syn blend and it seems to work pretty good. Yea it smokes like crazy but im thinkin its cuz the carb is not tuned right. Just my .02.
