This is my first time on a forum so bear with me here. Ive got an '84 sundowner and its gotten a bit temperamental when it comes to starting. Normally it fires right up. Impressively fast for a 29yr old truck, but lately Ill turn the key and get a single click. I know the battery is good, and when it works the starter turns just fine. I'm fairly sure its the solenoid on the starter not making a complete connection, but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has run into a similar situation before I go throwing money at stuff that isn't broke. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Check all the connections to the starter, make sure they're clean, and give them a little electrical grease, to keep them from corroding again. If it's still being tempermental, start tracing back your wires. Hope that helps.

I would 1st make sure your battery is 100% charged.Next do a voltage check on alternator and battery not running.I would make sure your ground wires are removed and clean for good grounding. If the starter is taking a time out and having to try again and the above is good, sounds like classic symptoms of starter getting lazy.Best bet is to get the starter bench tested(or take to a local auto store) for a free charging/start test.Solenoids on starters normally go bad and or parts of the starter worn brushes etc.If it is hesitating to start or having to retry I would buy a reman new starter over a rebuild anyday. My 87 went for wks with a similar issue two or three times to start and knew it was the starter(only 5yrs old) going bad and this is literally normal with todays parts.I tried to get this in order and make good sense.
