I just recently purchased this 89 b2200 and it has a random clicking noise coming from the engine somewhere. It's not a constant click. It will go off and on. I'm not sure what it is I'm not sure where it's coming from. I need some help. I was reading some of the forums here and I'm assuming it's the heads. But I could be wrong.

Bad tappet?

Sorry for the incompetence but what and where is the tappet? Is it a expensive or not? Is it hard to change?

Tappet or lifter is in the cylinder head. Most of the B2200 engines will have such hydraulic lifter noise, typically nor worrying about it.

When I bought my '88 B2200 back in 1994, owner told me about the lifter noise. And it's done that on and off for the last 19.5 years/150K miles....

Some switch to mechanical lifters from the B2000 to quiet things a bit, do a Search.

How do I make it less quiet? Because it can get a little noisy and annoying. Can a different oil type change the the sound effect? Is there anything I can do to completely stop the noise.

Welcome to the B scene.

Could be...
Bad spark plug?
Cracked exhaust manifold?
Lifter?

The head won't tick... unless there is a crack in it.

Lifters can be replaced (because they are truly bad) or removed, cleaned and reinstalled (after soaking in oil) but if you do this you may as well repalce them to ensure trouble/noise free operation, or sometimes it's an indicator your oil should be changed.

They can be noising if the truck sat for some time without being run. Dan
