I recently bought a 1989 mazda b2600i 4x4 truck. Every since I bought it I've been having trouble with lack of power. The guy I bought the truck from told me it was sluggish until it warms up which is true, but even after it warms up it still has a lack of power. For example you can put the gas petal to the floor and it just sits still. Could this be a timing problem or something else? I don't think it's a fuel system problem, bc it back fires which makes me think it's getting to much fuel or am I mistaking? If somebody could help me with my problem or at least point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Rough idle? Could be a plugged fuel filter, or anything. My 88 b2200 would drop face spit aputter and be very sluggish then act fine but weak in power. And all it was, was a simple fuel filter. Maybe not your issue but worth checking. Or could be bad sensors lots thinga. Take it to a local advance or autozone etc an have codes ran.

I went to autozone about a week ago they said there test machines only goes back to a 1995. And as far as the idle if varies sometimes it'll purr like a cat then other times it shakes bad and it'll actually cut off.

Check the wire from your alternator to the choke.

Remove and inspect the ECU for fried capacitors. 2.6 ECUs are notorious for messing with your truck and your head!

It's under the passenger kick panel.

Ok I'll check that out also. Thank y'all for all the help. Hopefully one of these suggestions will fix my problem. Do you know roughly about how much a ECU cost if that is the issue?

I've seen some report $200 - $300 depending where you send it. Try b2600i.com (a member here). I don't know what he charges.

Don't just start throwing money at this truck, make sure you know what is wrong first. Dan

Ok thank you. I think I'm gonna start with the basic first such changing the spark plugs and wires, and adjust the timing. Then if that doesn't fix it I'll move on to ECU. I'm hoping it a simple fix. I don't wanna drop a whole lot of money in it, but I will if I have too.
