They are actually pretty strong! I have a V8 in one of my trucks. Estimated to have 270 HP, and 370 TQ. None of the four rears I've had in it have outright broken(two 2200, and two 2600 rears) from applied power.
The problem arises at wheel spin. Because they're open differentials, only one wheel spins. This causes excessive wear on the spider gears and the diff pin. That's what invites failure.
