use a really really big flat tipped pry bar. or if you bed is off... you could always unbolt the spare carrier...

thanks for the info.....that's exactly what i had to do, but i don't own a prybar that long........ what ended up happenning two weeks ago......
went to sears cause they had tires for 50 each with 40,000 mile warranty... so i went for it, that and a lifetime alignment for sixty bucks.... well i told the guy that drove the truck into the shop that i wanted to know if they could get the spare down before they started puting the tires on.... well, never heard anything for about an hour, so i decided to go back in and see what was up.... well what i saw was my truck with new tires on the front, the spare which was on the pass. front end, laying behind the truck and no tires on the rear end.... the shop manager happened to be outside havin a smoke and asked one guy what was going on with my truck.... that guy replied " can't get the spare down" and he continued on working on another car, while mine just sat there.... i walked over to the manager, told him it was my pickup, and asked if i could use a couple of tools of theirs to get it down..... i asked him for a long crow bar.... he says how long... i put my hands up about 3 feet apart.... manager asks him if they have one.... guy replies, yeah but it ain't ten feet long....lol..... he hands me the prybar, i go to see if i can get it into the slot on the lowering assy. then i ask him for a crescent wrench...."what for" he says.... uh to put on the prybar so i can turn it duh..... but i was respectful when i asked for it.... so there i am lowering my spare in the sears shop while other customers and employees were eyeing me probly thinking "i never woulda thought of that".... anyway... it was just funny, really the only thing that pissed me off was that they never even called to tell me they couldn't get my spare down(well that and the fact that i still can't find my spare tool anywhere), they just let my truck sit there..... just one bay they couldn't use for another customer....ha ha... but yeah man thanks for the reply.... oh and problem solved now.... manufactured my own tool from a jack bar from a dodge one ton lol

i had part of a spare removal bar and had to use a wrench to turn it, and it didnt really fit the spare tire mechanism, but it worked... until i removed the entire assembly.

i was thinking about mounting a bracket in the bed and losing the under carriage system... it's damn near rusted to crap anyway.... would i have to remove the bed to unbolt it?

yeah its real hard to get to otherwise... and the bolts would hit the bottom of the bed before you got them out. bed is real easy tho, pull your tails, drop the wiring thru the tail light buckets, and get the plate lights pulled, 6 bolts and the bed comes off. and you would only need to lift the bed far enough to unbolt it.

this is where it was on mine... and i cut my bed short leaving that cross member exposed but its 3 12mm or 14mm bolts that go down from the top, but are right underneath the bedfloor...
