It kind of depends, can you tell where it is leaking? Did the vent allow any water to get into the axle assembly while it was sitting?

Shouldn't be hard to replace the gasket, just have a lot of parts to take off.

it looks like its coming from somewhere at the top of the housing but not the vent. it doesnt seem to be to major but id still feel better fixing it. and yes the bolts are tight.
Thanks everyone

I realize I'm about 5 years late with this comment on this topic, but what the heck.
My '93 B2200 suddenly developed a whine on acceleration. When I took it in for a diagnosis we didn't get much past the fact that the differential housing was leaking - "rotted through" said the mechanic. (I live in the maritimes of Canada and rust grows like weeds on anything make of steel).

Anyway, we discovered there was NO oil in the differential case. How long it had been like that is anyone's guess because to my knowledge the differential hadn't been checked in 10 years or so. The truck is driven only about twice a month for shopping in town - 150km round trips - so not much servicing was ever done. Me bad!

We scraped the housing well and used some JB Weld to patch the small holes we could find and filled it with oil. It still leaked but NOT after the vehicle was parked a while. From this we determined there must be more holes near the top of the housing where oil that was splashed up during movement was leaking down the outside of the housing after the vehicle was parked.

Sure enough - more holes were found at the top. So - more epoxy weld, and so far, so good.

My big fear now is that the housing will fail past the point of repair and no one knows where I can find another housing for less than a $1,000 ( and that ain't gonna happen on my watch!)

Oh, about the whine... it's still there. Only on acceleration from about 30kph - disappears when coasting. And it's not loud - just noticeable. Will let you know if we figure it out.
