Brake booster rusting

Hi all,

I have a brand new brake booster installed on my 89 auto 2.2 for about 6 months now.

It's starting to rust all over the housing. Everything else is new and there are no brake fluid leaks. It was not painted before I installed it but it was "finished" from the manufacturer.

Has anyone else experienced this? Next time I stop at the parts store where I bought it I'll see if I can paint it without causing myself a warranty issue, which I don't think it should.

Dan - my brake booster replacement was a rebuilt unit, from O'Reillys a few years ago. I would need to open my hood to see if mine's painted or whatever.

But in Arizona rust is not an issue anyway, so I'm pretty much no help at all here !!!

You'd be surprised. Mine has seen nothing but water since it's install. I would think they would be "treated" but maybe not...

Honestly I would wet sand, primer it,and paint.I seriously doubt painting the outside would affect the warranty.Just tape the reseviour off(spllg) uh tired, and should be a ok.Multiple coats lightly and I suggest krylon solid product walmart the cheapest.Piece of cake.

87, that's probably what I'll end up doing. I may even just remove the unit when I tear out the dash and install my tilt steering, ignition switch, and fix the air selector.

I just brushed on Rust-oleum gloss black enamel. Pretty simple and it has held up well.
