Here is a larger copy of the RFW system in the manual as well as a little discussion.

In short, when you engage 4wd (hi or lo), the computer will automatically lock the front AXLES (not hubs) together. When you shift back to 2wd, the front hubs will remain locked if you don't press the FRW switch. This allows you to shift on the fly between to 2wd and 4wd while heading down the trail or snow patched road. YOU CAN ONLY SHIFT BETWEEN 2HI and 4HI ON THE FLY AFTER THE FRONT AXLES ARE ALREADY LOCKED. If the hubs aren't yet locked, then you need to be stopped when you shift into 4wd initially. Shifting to or from 4Lo and unlocking the hubs must also be done from a complete stop.
In order to unlock them, just shift to 2wd and the press the RFW switch, while stopped!
I have an 89 4x4 also. The back-up thing is totally unnecessary and does nothing that driving forward won't do. That methodology was for vehicles with auto locking hubs, not auto locking axles.
EDIT: Corrected typo from necessary to unnecessary
