I know little about the RFW
how does that work ?
like auto hubs, but vacuum right ?
can you have it in 4x4 and turn off the hubs ?
can you turn them on while NOT in 4x4 ?
are they like auto's in that you have to back up after to unwind them ?

Any info you folks can give me would be great

thanks !

You can click on these to enlarge them, and you can also right-click them and select 'Save Image As' or something like that and save them on your computer for future reference.
Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for that Earl

Feel free to make a copy of that 1991 owners manual if you would like
I don't have one for my '92

Thanks again !

LOL, it takes too much time to do the whole manual, but if you need a page or two of something in it, I can do that.
Look on Ebay to see if there are any available to buy.....they shouldn't be too much for one I would think. If we ever get any more B trucks in our JY again, I'll grab the manual if I find one.

I will look on ebay

I can scan it at work and make a really nice PDF to share

Here is a larger copy of the RFW system in the manual as well as a little discussion.

" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank

In short, when you engage 4wd (hi or lo), the computer will automatically lock the front AXLES (not hubs) together. When you shift back to 2wd, the front hubs will remain locked if you don't press the FRW switch. This allows you to shift on the fly between to 2wd and 4wd while heading down the trail or snow patched road. YOU CAN ONLY SHIFT BETWEEN 2HI and 4HI ON THE FLY AFTER THE FRONT AXLES ARE ALREADY LOCKED. If the hubs aren't yet locked, then you need to be stopped when you shift into 4wd initially. Shifting to or from 4Lo and unlocking the hubs must also be done from a complete stop.

In order to unlock them, just shift to 2wd and the press the RFW switch, while stopped!

I have an 89 4x4 also. The back-up thing is totally unnecessary and does nothing that driving forward won't do. That methodology was for vehicles with auto locking hubs, not auto locking axles.

EDIT: Corrected typo from necessary to unnecessary

I forgot to mention that I have an RFW switch also if you need one. Shoot me an email to if you still need one.
