so my sister broke my truck while driving it. when i got to her it wouldn't go into any gear but 4th. i got it home, pulled the tranny and put it on my bench. I turned it by hand in each gear with no issue so i pulled the tail off and looked inside, it was impressively clean no smudge dirt or shavings just gear oil residue.

i hit a point of WTF, and i don't know whats wrong with it any suggestions?

only guess i have is maybe its not the tranny and its the clutch but if thats the case why would it go in and out of fourth but not any other gear.....

Tired I am.However IF only going in one gear to me rules out the clutch master, and slave cylinder.Next unless your clutch is toast and lower gears are gone, does seem to point to clutch itself. No junk in gear oil is a good sign being the internals are not coming apart.Did the truck slip,or drag in gear before hand like months, wks giving signs when winding it up.I would check your clutch for hot spots,or just typical wear being it is out and if it has unknown mileage on it,may say go new full clutch kit(release bearing, and even pilot bearing, and do a rear main seal while there.)Done and maybe too much info or not enuff. My thought and tired as dirt ones.

truck ran fine and smooth untill it happened and i had to drive it 50 miles in 4th gear starting dead stop uphill twice no slip (took me a full mile to hit 40mph) but i tried every other gear and it just whines like the gears are brushing but not engaging. one thing i thought about AFTER i pulled the tranny is putting it in gear with the engine off to see if it would allow it to engage. clutch has less that 5 thousand miles on it but i was wondering if it was a hydrolic issue not a mechanical issue if it was the clutch.

southern Utah, and i found a couple transmissions here for 200$ also found another whole truck for 600$. body and seats are trash but the rest looks good for parts i'm just trying to get the moolah together for it. if i do get it, what i don't use (that's still good) will end up offered on here.

well i went to a salvage yard and got me a different transmission, i wanted to keep the old one but couldn't afford a $100 core charge. anyways i noticed they left the transmission outside for a few days and we got some sprinkles, on the way home the transmission rolled and some water came out is there a way i could "flush" this thing? and roughly how much gear oil does this thing take so i know what i need to buy.

Well for a flush I would use seafoams trans flush.I would pour it in and just rotate the shaft for a few minutes to work in the flush tilting and move back and forth being not installed. Then drain.I would not fret over that bc once you reinstall the new used trans fill it with (2.0quarts of gear oil) and run for awhile. If your still concerned drain the trans if all is fine and refill with a 2nd round of new fluid, which should take care of the water anyway. This should work and yes 2.0 quarts for gear box.
