Jiffy - I don't think you did anything wrong at all. In the recent cold weather here, mine smokes a lot in the morning when the outside weather is like 40F (it's pretty impressive), doesn't do that on 60F mornings, that's water vapor.
Also, it's possible that there was either straight weight oil in it before, or just that the more-volatile components in the old oil had already burned off, that could compound the observation.
I use straight-weight 40 oil year round here in the B2200.
And it's possible that one oil v. another could smoke more. I think most of the smoking will be gone in a few weeks and as temperatures get back to normal. At least you don't need emissions test again for two more years.
