Hi. I was wondering if anyone has put an 88 alternator into a 91. all the connections look the same with the exception of the 2 wire plug. they both have 2 wires but a different shaped plug. can i just cut off the plug that fits and crimp it back on the good alternator? thanx in advance

Personally, I wouldn't do that. I would strip off a little insulation from the wires for the existing plug and solder on the other plug wires, and wrap well with electrical tape. That way you're not cutting or crimping any crucial wires.

That way you could use either type of alternator in the future without monkeying with the connections. That's what I would do if it was my truck.

weird, I didn't know that the 91 had a different connector. Is it a fuel injected model? I know that 86 and 89, and the 89 RX-7 use the same plug.

I do like Cusser's idea, but I'd be afraid of having a connector hanging around behind the alternator. If it were me doing this, I'd use the one from the 88, that way I could upgrade to the RX-7 alternator if I needed another replacement.

dont do it!!! i tried and it wouldn't work at all as a one wire so i went and got it tested and it was still good so i tried splicing and connecting the wires for the harness stripes to stripes, and solid color to solid color and that's when shit started melting. so i swapped them, still shit melting. so i would highly recommend against it. i had to get a new alt with the correct harness and i said screw the harness and am running just the one wire, i have a volt meter so i dont need a dummy light. that's all the harness is for, dummy light and somthin else.

Above: could be correct, I don't know for sure.

In my case I'd be buying a warrantied new alternator anyway, as I wouldn't want to deal with a used one.

I would need a little bit more information on your model Dummass, so I can compare wiring diagrams to see what needs to go where. I know that for the 88 carb'd 2.2 there are 3 connectors. One is for the idiot light, one is for the heater, and I honestly forget what the third is for (maybe a V-Referece.) But I'll look for ya.

both alternators came from carb'd trucks. there are 4 connections in total. 1 for the choke. 1 large hot wire to battery. then the 2 wire plug, I'm thinking that one wire is for the field and the other for the guage. they are both 50 amp mitsubishi alternators. I am going to try and take them apart and just switch the regulators. the problem with the one that was originally in the truck is that the top bolt busted off in the alternator and i messed up the threads getting it out(dummass). I was thinking of using a nut and bolt in the top hole but the alternator was showing the alternator light occasionally anyway so I pulled the alternator from my 88 parts truck then discovered the plug was different. I'm just in the middle of putting a rebuilt head and weber on the 91
