Hello bsceners, I just took head off to replace head gasket and noticed that the tops of the pistons go from real clean (piston #1) to progressively really dirty(piston #4). What does that indicate? Will post pics as soon as I can..

Mine looked pretty much the same, see the thread in the signature link at bottom for photos.

Assuming that your engine has over 120K miles (or double that), if you have smoking issue, are you considering R&R of the pistons, glaze-breaking of the cylinders (light honing), and installing new rings and connecting rod bearings? That's what I did, but I did install new pistons too, as I'm not the world's best cleaner. I assume you're going to re-do the cylinder head while it's out.

Hey cusser, I got a new weber 38, u see the cables above the alternator? What can I get rid of? Had my bottom end done 3 yeara ago, no smoke yet

Electrical cables that are above the alternator? You'll be able to get rid of all of those. Obviously you need the alternator cables, and the wire that goes from the rear of the alternator to the carburetor choke heater, because you'll also use that with your Weber.

looks good man, nice and clean. I was supprised at how easy it was to take the head off, especially after my third head gasket.....don't ask. lol that valve cover is nice. btw, if your head gasket was bad, sometimes the coolant cleans the piston off pretty good if its getting in there, #4 was my cleanest piston.
