Agreed! I don't have a grand to drop on an A/C unit!
I have done a bunch of R-12 to R-134a converts at my old shop by just using adapters on the R-12 fittings, vacuuming out all the R-12 with a old refrigerator pump, flush the system to remove the R-12 mineral oil, and fill it to spec (a little lighter on the R-134a than the label says) with R-134a and proper amount of compatible oil, the 134a may leak out of the rubber hoses over time because the R-134a molecules are smaller than R-12 but overall, not noticeably fast. I did my sisters 86 Honda like that around 5 years ago and it still blows ice cold no issues.
I wan't to add A/C to my B, maybe in the future. Plus I just did a crap ton of "updates" to it. Power steering, Power windows, bucket seats, HID's, LED bar, camper shell, truck bed interior, etc. The wife isn't happy with how much I spent on it in the last few months, gotta let that blow over before I do much else
