The trans is gone on my new 84 b2000 5 speed.

I read the trans write up on the "other" site, but have more questions than what was covered.

Can I use a later 85+ b2000 transmission by changing the bell housing? They are more plentiful and seem to be a better design.

If the answer is NO, then what specific year of miata trans will work? I know it says 90-93, but it also mentioned that some input shafts are longer - so is this the case with the miata trans?

Rebuilding my current trans is not an option, nor is replacing it with another 84 trans, as I don't want the trans failing due to age and design.

Thanks!

You can use the 86-92/93 trans with a 2.0/2.2 or you can use a miata trans... You swap bellhousings and you swap tailhousings . Then it bolts right up

UPDATE:

i actually was hoping this was the case - that you could just swap them around. i purchased a trans from an 86 b2000 and tried...

but, they do not work. completely different input shafts in both length and spline count. different tailshaft lengths as well.

so, simply swapping the front and rear sections does not work.

i ended up buying a rebuild kit for about $130 and just rebuilt the original.

Someone must sold you a wrong year. My 84 has a newer 86, trans in it. I did the swap.

I just did a 87 rx7 swap in my 92 b2200 and when I bought the trans the guy gave me 2 older style rx7 transmissions. The two older ones (pre 86 I believe) are different tail housing and bell housings and would probably bolt right up with your bell and tail housing.
